SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

In summer of 2015, I was approached by Boots Riley and Significant Productions to concept a hybrid horse / man creature from the film Sorry to Bother You. These drawings are from a very early pre-production and were eventually used in the film as protest signs and to influence the final concepts and sculpts later handled by ADI.

The Equisapien

The equisapien was pitched as a hybrid creature between a man and a horse. I worked with Boots on making sure the man and horse ratio felt right. I felt it important for the character to have certain aspects of horse anatomy: the large, broad neck and the oversized triceps and thigh muscles systems all help to make the Equisapien feel like a powerful creature. The elongated wrists and enlarged middle finger point to horses and their unique toe and wrist placement.

Elements of a human life were added to the design of the Equisapien, including a Raiders tattoo, to point back to the character living in Oakland, CA.
